Workshop

W-02 / Gaga/dancers & Ohad Naharin‘s Repertory

Noa Zuk

In the frame of Winter Tanz 2017/18

This workshop gives dancers an opportunity to learn excerpts of Ohad Naharin’s choreographic works and to apply their training in Gaga to the repertory. Former Batsheva Company Dancer Noa Zuk brings many years of experience as a dancer, gaga teacher and established choreographer to this work.

Ohad Naharin has been hailed as one of the world’s preeminent contemporary choreographers. As artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company since 1990, he has guided the company with an adventurous artistic vision and reinvigorated its repertory with his captivating choreography. Naharin is also the originator of the movement language Gaga, which has enriched his extraordinary movement invention, revolutionized the company’s training, and emerged as a growing force in the larger field of movement practices for both dancers and non-dancers. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina, and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga/dancers deepens a dancer’s awareness of physical sensations, expands their palette of available movement options, enhances their ability to modulate energy, engages their explosive power and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures.

Noa Zuk (Israel) is a dancer, choreographer and teacher. She danced in the Batsheva Dance Company until 2009, under the artistic direction of Ohad Naharin. Noa danced in all of his creations for the company during those years, and was part of the original cast of pieces such as Naharin’s Virus, Mamutot, Telophaze, Three, Furo, and Max. She performed and toured extensively on the company’s many international tours. During her time with BDC, she also worked with and performed works by choreographers such as Mats Ek (Cullberg Ballet), Sharon Eyal (LEV Dance Company) Jiří Kylián (NDT), Yasmeen Godder, and Yoshifumi Inao (Norwegian National Ballet). She received the Yair Shapira award for excellence in dance in 2007. Since 2009 Noa has created her own works and collaborated extensively with interdisciplinary artist Ohad Fishof creating performing and touring nationally and internationally. In summer 2014 she was commissioned to create a new piece for Repertory Dance Theater in Utah. Her collaboration Garden of Minutes, with Ohad Fishof, was premiered as part of the Curtain Up Festival in Tel Aviv, in 2015. Noa is also a renowned teacher. She has been teaching composition, technique, and repertory workshops (both of her own work and of Naharin’s choreographies) worldwide, and is a Gaga movement language teacher since 2007. www.gagapeople.com
