Workshop with Ian Garside
In the frame of Winter Tanz 2017/18

This is a physiological training from a dance perspective, aiming to harness and refine an all-round availability for a multitude of movement potentials. It is a very physical ‘technique’ workshop, dealing with coordination, musicality, stamina and adaptability; all approached with an attention to dynamism, finesse, enjoyment, as well as loud bouncy music! Ian’s teaching constantly moves through space, rarely taking the traditional ‘front on’ dance class format. We prepare with group games and improvi-
sations, before embarking upon a sustained development of movement patterns and sequences that start on the floor and gradually build to upright locomotion and finally lead to explosive jumps and inversions.

Ian Garside

Ian Garside (GB) discovered contemporary dance through classical drama. He earned a BA (Hons) from the Laban Center London and then continued studying at P.A.R.T.S. Brussels. Since 2010 he works as a performer for various companies and choreographers in Europe, i.a. Punchdrunk (Shanghai), Liquid Loft/Chris Haring (Vienna) and DV8 Physical Theater (London). Ian has taught in all sorts of situations for all levels of experience; both for dance lovers and professionals as well as children and seniors. As part of master classes, workshops and auditions for DV8, he taught i.a. at ImPulsTanz (Vienna), Institut del Teatre (Barcelona), Onassis Cultural Center (Athens) and Dancemakers (Toronto).
