    A walk into dance

    Marcela Giesche

What makes walking different from dancing?  Is it the direction in space? The body's axis in relation to the ground? The speed? The repetition? The efficiency? The musicality?  Is there, in fact, any fundamental difference at all? In this performance project we will shift constantly between walking/running and "dancing" in order to examine where these two activities meet, what they can gain from one another, and how they can exist simultaneously in the moving body. We will consciously work on bringing our daily bodies into the dance training. Movement sequencing that we innately understand from walking, can also inform and clarify movement patterns in other spatial relationships to the ground. By reminding ourselves to relate and draw our dancing from the daily movement and mental state of walking, we may find that our dancing develops an ease, strength, endurance, and clarity, and that our use of focus becomes natural and instinctive. We will also examine the way we are accustomed to look at other bodies in a pedestrian setting in order to understand how to guide the viewer's focus and interest in the transformation of the dancer's body. Through this working process we will structure a tightly scored performance work based on the techniques, improvisations, phrase work, and images from the training. Each dancer will be challenged to bring their dancing to a performance level while at the same time staying grounded in their personal interest and movement research.  Application for the project: mueller@tanzfabrik-berlin.de | Fee: 170 € / red: 150 € / professional dancers: 130 € Open Contemporary training: Mo & Wed 18:15 - 19:45  led by Marcela Giesche 5.1.- 11.2.2015  The class is a combination of dynamic release techniques, qikung, spirals, and grounded animal-like floor work. The basic physicality of walking and running are studied and used to inform the dancer's movement quality, efficiency, and use of momentum in all spatial orientations. Continuous movement flow, and improvisational tasks with strong attention to the feedback of the senses, are used to bring the dancer into a instinctive state of availability while thoroughly warming up the physical body. Marcela gives strong attention to the use of the floor as a tool to form and inform the body in movement. This requires a constant negotiation of the body’s present momentum with a clear redirecting of intention into space. Through the specific buildup of the training, each dancer is able to find their own anatomical alignment, timing, and weight in the material. At the end of the class, these elements are brought together in a sweeping movement phrase where each dancer is asked to challenge the delicate balance between fall and control. Fields and Resonances

    Jan Burkhardt, Sigal Zouk

Building on the specific way of existing in our bodies and space and how to relate to inside&outside as practiced in the training, we will explore principles of contrapuntal music in performance, both looking at the impact of such music, but also to investigate its rules and structural features to build constellations in time and space. Counterpoint is the relationship between voices that are interdependent harmonically (polyphony) yet independent in rhythm and contour."It is hard to write a beautiful song. It is harder to write several individually beautiful songs that, when sung simultaneously, sound as a more beautiful polyphonic whole. The internal structures that create each of the voices separately must contribute to the emergent structure of the polyphony, which in turn must reinforce and comment on the structures of the individual voices. The way that is accomplished in detail is...'counterpoint'." John Rahn Application for the project: mueller@tanzfabrik-berlin.de   Fee: 170 € / red: 150 € / professional dancers: 130 €Open Contemporary trainingWe start from paying deep attention to our sensory awareness through exercises and scores based on touch, movement and breath. Tuned with our channels we open to them to others and the space around. The fundamental aim is to always strive for a situation of relevance and meaningfulness, and from there to investigate the potentiality of the moment, which then opens the next moment, and the next etc. Another emphasis will be to play with given forms (floor patterns, movements phrases , dynamic developments) and see how we can apply our process to each given structure and bring it to life.16.2. - 25.3.2015   Mo & Wed 18:15- 19:45   Fee: 10x card: 95 € / red.: 90 € / prof.: 70 €

    Performance project: Re-Movement-Search

    Shai Faran

In my way of working, movement research contains three main layers of work: - The movement vocabulary, the material, the movements themselves. - The quality in which we are performing those movements. - A concept or an idea that we can put on the material and the quality, or, in other words- what do we want to do with it. These three layers have to co-exist, to function together, to nourish one another, to influence each other, to be able to exist independently and to become one, eventually. The base layer is the physical vocabulary, which is where we will begin. We will establish the movement material by working with different movement principles, restrictions and limitations, and will work towards developing a specific way of moving. After the material is established, we will start to build a certain quality, which will affect the vocabulary itself. After these two layers are present, to a certain level, we will start to introduce a concept on top, which will lead to a deeper way of thinking and looking on the material and the quality itself. To me, the different combination between different vocabularies, qualities and concepts is the research itself. If everything was already invented, what is left for us to do is to re-compose, re-discover, re-organise things in new constellations and re-search. This project will expose the participants to my on-going movement-re-search and will lead them through its progression to give a taste the potential of this way of working, but more then that- it will give them the tools to develop their own research. In the Wish for Continuity

    Shai Faran

The only thing that is forever continous in our lives is ourselves. Still, there is the wish to have continous relationships and regularities with other things, people, places, ideas, practices and situations along the way. In todays "movement market", as there are so many possibilities and so much information running around us, if we want to have regularity and continuity, we need to actively create it for ourselves. We need to make clear choices and follow those choices in a sustainable way. In terms of movement - following the same physical practice for longer time, to experience the long term affects and results. In terms of knowledge - following the same source of knowledge for longer time, to arrive to the deeper layers of the information. In terms of perspective - to follow something for enough time that can give you a different perspective about it then the one that you had in first place. In this performance project, I would like to share my continous practice and research and to invite people that have the interest in this practice, to start a process of regularity and progression in a frame of meeting and working situation. I want to initiate a structure for people to follow, learn and get intrigued by my ideas and propositions, and for me to share those idea with people who have hunger, passion, taste, work ethic and desire to have fun and to work hard. The work itself will be directed to three main topics: Warm-up, technical work and dancing. Each one of those topics will be explored through my personal approach to it, which is focused on physical work, breaking habits, challenging the body and the mind and having good time.Fee: 170 € / red: 150 € / professional dancers: 130 € / Registration for the project: schule@tanzfabrik-berlin.de  (Please send a short cv and a letter of motivation for the project in English)Additionally you can join: 3.-14.8.2015 Mo-Fr    10:00 -11:30    Contemporary Training / Shai Faran (closed group) Application: schule@tanzfabrik-berlin.de

The Instrument: Dance Composition and Aliveness

    Maya M. Carroll

Dancing with our life experience is a treasures gift we are able to develop and expand. Acknowledging and handling contents, our research will involve direct inputs as well as indirect influences from outside our dance training. Movers and dancers who wish to engage with dynamic states of instant composition are invited to join this two-weeks intensive. Working individually, with partners and as a group – we will observe the fine boarders between personal experience and performance. Every session will be a continual process, following on from a class in which we will tune and awaken our senses. Starting with the body, we will practice handling physicality and directing it from centre to space. Investigating deeper, we will work towards specifying how we carry our physicality in our dancing; how we elaborate feelings, desire and thought – with the materials of dance making. Moderating emotions and technical abilities becomes a language of self expression / narrative – while we move. Practicing our ability to concentrate as well as taking a necessary distance from ourselves will support our objectivity while improvising. Observing how we nourish the work with our presence without fear/concern will allow us to enjoy ourselves and the choreography that takes place in real time. Fee: 170 € / red: 150 € / professional dancers: 130 € / Application for the project: schule@tanzfabrik-berlin.de Participants are asked to send a short introduction about themselves AFTER they have applied. Please write about your background / interests / professional activities. These letters will help with preparing the ground work for the project and provide some ideas about who you are independently and within our working group. Nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

    Sonia Rodriguez

Every day we try to enjoy the moment, learning and following our way, gathering our own experiences. The motor of dancers and movers is our body, it’s the tool by which we explore the movements to communicate and canalize our emotions. All external impulses influence our dance and they manifest differently depending on our personality. This is the knowledge that we want to expand and share with others. In this performance project I would like to share my choreographic point of view, and contribute ideas to reflect on our capabilities and limitations as a performer. I invite dancers and movers who want to experiment and transform our old patterns. It will be an evolving process: we will start with a technical class to work the perception of the body as layers, with different sensation and emotional states, emphasizes the body´s natural alignments and movements. In the second part we will put our attention on more complex phrases, combining different energetic qualities and different levels. All this under the inspiring idea of “nothing to fear and nothing to doubt”. The first objective is working our presence without fear, this will allow us to be honest with our feelings and inspiration, and being able to share it with the group. We will also go through improvisation to explore the free movement, finding our own strategies to perform. Re-imagining a future through movement

Performance project: Re-imagining a future through movement (fully booked) Is it possible for us to collectively, and individually, re-imagine our future through movement? In a world beset by wars, inequality, injustice, discrimination, racism, corruption, poverty, climate change, human rights abuses, terrorism, etc, how do we move in response to these problems? How can dance address these issues and create changes? What can we really achieve, within the confines of a studio? These are the key questions that we will be asking in this project. I would like to gather a group of social movers to question and tease out the nature and the purpose of dance and movement. Why do we dance and what are we dancing for? This project asks each of us to re-look at the reasons we dance/move and attempts to help us develop a personal relation to what moves us. Participants will bring in their own research questions and together we will develop strategies for collaborative transformation, harnessing the interactive process as a tool. Movements and moving become both an individual, as well as, a collective effort. Other than being a practice-based research in movement-making, this project also hopes to open up broader socio-political questions and implications about movement, about individual/collective agency, and about collaboration and community in movement-making. This project welcomes socially-conscious movers, dancers, performers, philosophers, educators, body-workers or anyone who wishes to create a more empathetic and connected future through movements. Registration for the project: mueller@tanzfabrik-berlin.de  |  Fee: 170 € / red: 150 € / professional dancers: 130 €       Additionally you can join the open training: Open training: The body relates The focus of my open class is to understand and find movement through the way our body relates. We explore how the body reaches out and makes contact with bodies other than our own. The guiding principle is that movement/dance is a function of how we relate to each other. We start our investigation with our own body, and observe how relating to another body can open up new possibilities and guide the way we move. The aim is to produce an awareness of the network of body relations that we are situated within and to which we are also actively contributing. And inside this network, our body finds its freedom to move. 26.10. - 16.12.    Mo + We 18:15 - 19:45  |  Fee: 10x card: 95 € / red.: 90 € / prof.: 70 €
