Introduction to Laban Movement Studies

Workshop with Loreen Michelfelder

Laban Movement Studies is a tool to capture the variety and complexity of movement. Exploring the categories of body, space, shape and dynamics (effort), will help to identify personal preferences, to increase expressiveness and to develop creative skills. Movement/dance improvisations, set movement sequences and feedback discussions will connect the practical and theoretical parts of the course.

The workshop can be used as a prerequisite for the EUROLAB Certificate Program in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies (www.eurolab-programs.com).

 Accessibility Note
The workshop will be held in German spoken language, follow-up questions for clarification needs can also be asked in English. The “theory” will be introduced in movement, orally and written in English and German on posters. The symbols from Laban will also be introduced, but it is not necessary to memorize them. There will be partner and small group work, but touch is never mandatory. The workshop is based on proximity in space and works with verbal cues, action and reaction. Throughout the workshop, a variety of music will be used as an important part of the improvisations. We will discuss how music contributes to our experience of the movement. Laban’s scales, which are set movement sequences, will be done with and without music. This workshop is open for all levels, genders and generations. If needed, a free workshop place for an accompanying assistant will be facilitated for participants with disabilities.  Information about our location & studio access in Kreuzberg can be found here. For questions or more information, please contact Zoé Duflot at workshop@tanzfabrik-berlin.de.
