The Axis Syllabus - Universal Movements

Online Workshop with Frey Faust
In the frame of Winter Tanz 2021/22

Universal Movement
The human body needs to move. How do we move?
The human body needs to breathe. How do we breathe?
The human spirit needs to dance... let's dance!

In this Axis Syllabus Session, we will look at and practice locomotion basics like articular and muscular role division, spinal macro and micro organization and coordinated use of gravitational force and momentum. To also plug into the salutary spiritual aspect of moving together, we will work with simple repeating motifs to find the commonality and joy of shared time and space. Respect for and knowledge of the body and rigor in the application of that knowledge offers us the possibility to harness gravitation and mechanical forces, to fill the room beyond the limits of skin and the body's dimensions to radiate into the world. The Axis Syllabus codex is a compendium or lexicon of the physiological attributes of the human body, an open source resource about his movement possibilities and limitations. To find the information archived in the AS and to participate in it's consolidation see: www.axissyllabusforum.org ; www.freyfaust.org

Please note: According to the current status, the workshop will take place completely online. Further information will be communicated by mail shortly before the workshop starts.

Frey Faust

Now 61, Frey Faust began performing on the street as a pantomime, dancer-actor in the family troupe at the age of eight. At the age of fourteen, Nita Little, the co-founder of the movement, introduced him to contact improvisation, which he has practiced and taught all his life. He also studied Capoeira, African Dance, fencing, karate, Aikido, jazz, ballet, yoga, percussion, physics and anatomy. He has worked a.o. with Merce Cunningham, Meredith Monk, Stephen Petronio and Donald Byrd. In the 90's Frey began to compile The Axis Syllabus lexicon, which is now available in its fifth edition at www.axissyllabusforum.org.  He also built a written symbolic language for movement notation, evaluation, pathology diagnosis and invention called the Human Movement Alphabet, also available on the Axis Syllabus Forum. He continues to create, perform and teach across the globe to this day! Together with Francesca Pedulla and Baris Mihci, he is building a center for the Axis Syllabus Meshwork in the south of Italy.
