Exploration & Creation

Workshop with Jessica Gaynor
In the frame of WinterTanz 2022/23

We will begin by exploring what drives us, inspires us and demands our attention. We will then work toward translating these ideas into movement through various improvisational approaches and techniques, working both on our own and collectively. From these explorations, we will move seamlessly into choreographing dances and making choices about time, space, energy, focus, and our relationships to others. The group will discuss what we see and how it affects us. This workshop will be a laboratory to develop new choreographic skills, create work both independently and collaboratively, build tools for a richer choreographic process and share work within a supportive community. During the process, participants will generate movement vocabulary specific to their ideas, create phrases, explore variations, repetition, patterns, pathways and partnerships, while focusing on their own choreographic voices.

Accessibility Note
The workshop uses English spoken language, minor translations into German can be made for clarification purposes. There will be partner work, but touch is never mandatory. It is based on focus and proximity in space, working with action & reaction. If the participants agree to touch, exercises that rely on weight sharing will be part of the work. Throughout the workshop a variety of music will be used as an important part of choreographing. We will discuss how music/sound contributes to our experience of watching dance. The level is indicated to require movement experience as participants should be able to navigate spatial relations and pathways in regards to other moving bodies. This general understanding will be the building blocks for choreographic exploration. If needed, a free workshop place for an accompanying assistant will be facilitated for participants with disabilities. Information about our location & studio access in Kreuzberg can be found here.
