Kathak - The AudioVisual Body

Kurs with Ghazal Ramzani

In the frame of Moving through styles

Kathak is a classical Indian dance form that sees dance as a confluence of music, movement, and theatre. At the heart of Kathak is the idea of what I like to call the AudioVisual body that conveys a range of emotions, meanings, and stories. The dancer’s body can narrate a story without using extern elements: it is an orchestra which creates percussive music through the pulsating rhythm of the feet while moving in different qualities, shapes and forms with the upper body and manifesting the mood especially in the facial expression.

The class offers participants the opportunity to explore the unique art of Kathak and discover their AudioVisual body as well the three main components of Kathak dance: rhythm, movement, and expression. Through a series of exercises and compositions, participants will learn about the intricate footwork used to create rhythms, as well as different aspects of upper body movement and the interaction of these two aspects with each other. Additionally, participants will engage with the expressive aspects of Kathak, including facial expressions and hand gestures. Finally, all these three aspects interact to narrate a story, express emotions, and convey meaning.
