(A-Uga)Afro Ugandan Dance

Kurs with Michael Kaddu

In the frame of Moving through styles

A-Uga Technique is a movement dance class/style and pedagogy developed by Michael since 2006. A-Uga Technique is the development of oral traditions, norms and traditional tribal dances that fuse different African movements together across generations. This dance class/style is about more than just movements, it is about a spiritual connection and understanding of oneself. The focus is on how participants make the movements their own, embody them and how we can anchor ourselves with our physical intelligence. Like information / stories / secrets passed down through generations in our bodies. The body as an archive: How do we balance our energies so we can achieve more, have less stress and be happier. The focus is on physical intensity and the mental stimulation that comes with it. The balance between movement and the search for stillness are the basic principles of this course, where we can find answers to questions like: What does it mean to unlearn and relearn history with the historicised body, the disciplined body, the co-ed body, the dancing body, as we play with opposing elements such as air, gravity, weightlessness, density and permeability to find out how the body can make music in such a state.

Michael Kaddu

As a Ugandan dance artist Michael has a strong base in Ugandan traditional dances and tribal spiritual practices. His interest lies on deconstructing movements to let the body create and transfer information, secrets, and rhythms to build up the body's own movement vocabulary. Michael has a decade and a half of experience in performing and teaching dance.
