Description

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamental elements of Kathak dance. The sessions will focus on key components such as rhythmic awareness, expressive use of the arms, turns, and footwork. Through guided exercises, participants will develop an understanding of how these elements work together to create the distinctive flow and musicality of Kathak. After a warm-up, the workshop will move into exploring how these traditional techniques can be translated and integrated into a contemporary dance context. Participants will have the opportunity to learn excerpts from José’s repertoire, gain insight into how classical vocabulary and contemporary movement language can interact and inspire each other. We will explore Indian rhythmic structures, to encourage and engage with rhythm both physically and creatively There will be time to experiment with these patterns through improvisation, allowing participants to play with timing, dynamics, and movement textures. By the end of the session, dancers will have explored both structured material and open creative exploration, developing new ways to connect rhythm, technique, and personal expression in their movement practice.
