Katastrophenkompositionen

Performance by Eva Meyer-Keller, Sybille Müller
In the frame of 8th Tanznacht Berlin 2014

A performance for adults by children

Eva Meyer-Keller and Sybille Müller have carried out intuitive catastrophe research and examined the cultural mediation of climate change since 2006.
Working with different experts – children as fantasy and craft experts, cooks as food preparation experts and scientists – various performances and films have been produced.
As part of the workshop Katastrophenkompositionen (Catastrophe Compositions) during Tanznacht Berlin, children between the ages of 10 and 12 orchestrate a series of catastrophes using simple everyday objects such as matches, sugar cubes, salt, beans and paper. Acting as composers, they create the sound of the disasters they have selected: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, tornados and melting icebergs.
A text is created from interviewing the children, capturing their visions of what a catastrophe is and how catastrophes are represented in our media. Associated topics like food production, mass migration, changes in environment and how all these things influence our culture and society become a dense network of streams of thought in which the children articulate their visions of what our future looks like. The performance is followed by a screening of the film Von Menschen gemacht.

Eva Meyer-Keller

Eva Meyer-Keller is working at the interface of performing and visual arts and has presented her work in the context of festivals, museums and theatres internationally.
Before she graduated from the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam she studied photography and visual art in Berlin (HdK) and London (Central St. Martins and Kings College). She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
Eva Meyer-Keller’s work is versatile: she shows her performances internationally, develops projects with other artists, performs for other choreographers and realizes video works. She has collaborated with Uta Eisenreich, Kate McIntosh and Sybille Müller. In addition to her own work she was involved in projects of Baktruppen, Jérôme Bel and Christine de Smedt / Les Ballets C de la B.

Sybille Müller

Sybille Müller circulates as an artist between performance, dance pedagogy and media theory. She studied dance pedagogy and stage dance at the Rotterdamse Dansacademie (RDA) and received her diploma in media studies at the University of the Arts Berlin in 2012. Due to her studies in social and economic communication, she combines both media theoretical and choreographic interests in her work. Along with collaborating and participating as a performer (Isabelle Schad, Volker März, Martin Nachbar, TWO FISH, deufert+plischke, Colette Sadler and others), she has created her own works, for instance LAYER#1 (2010) with Laurent Dailleau, SELF-MADE (2013) with Irina Müller and Marcello Silvio Busato. Since 2006 she has been working with Eva Meyer-Keller on the projects Bauen nach Katastrophen (2009) and Cooking Catastrophes (2011). The project Bauen nach Katastrophen led to the creation of the video work Von Menschen gemacht (2010).
