W-01 / Gaga/Dancers & Ohad Naharin's Repertoire

Yaniv Avraham

In the frame of Winter Tanz 2019/20

Ohad Naharin has been hailed as one of the world’s preeminent contemporary choreographers. As Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company from 1990-2018, and current House Choreographer, he guided the company with an adventurous artistic vision and reinvigorated its repertory with his captivating choreography. Naharin is also the originator of the movement research Gaga, which has enriched his extraordinary movement invention, revolutionized the company’s training, and emerged as a growing force in the larger field of movement practices for both dancers and non-dancers. Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening your body and adding flexibility, stamina and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga/dancers deepens a dancer’s awareness of physical sensations, expands their palette of available movement options, enhances their ability to modulate energy, engages their explosive power and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures. This workshop gives dancers an opportunity to learn excerpts of Ohad Naharin’s choreographic works and to apply their training in Gaga to the repertory.

Yaniv Avraham, now artistic director of MASPA and choreographer, was dancing seven years with the Batsheva Dance Company and performed in works by Ohad Naharin, Sharon Eyal, and Mats Ek. From 1999-2001 he trained at the Mate Asher School of Performing Art (MASPA) alongside the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company on Kibbutz Ga’aton. He received grants from the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Education, the Sharett Foundation, and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. Yaniv choreographed several works for Batsheva Dancers Create, for MASPA and Florida University, and his solo Somersault (2013) was performed in several festivals at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Tel Aviv, Dance Makers in Amsterdam, and MDF in Reggio Calabria (Italy). Yaniv has taught Gaga, Ohad Naharin’s movement language and repertory, as well as masterclasses and workshops internationally, f.ex. for dance companies including Carte Blanche, Cullberg Ballet and at dance departments at schools such as University of Florida, Jacksonville University and Tisch (NYU).
