Ridwan Rasheed is a Nigerian contemporary dancer, choreographer, researcher, and art activist from Bariga, Lagos, with roots in Oyo State. He began training in African indigenous dance at the age of five with the Footprints of David Art Academy. After graduating, he began developing his work that merges Yoruba Bata traditions with contemporary performance, critical theory, and experimental forms. He approaches the body as a site of ancestral knowledge, resistance, and postcolonial identity, bridging tradition with modern and technological experience. Ridwan’s practice reflects themes of struggle, faith, and socio-political awareness. Through choreography and performance, he reimagines cultural memory and collective identity. He has performed internationally and collaborated with German dance companies, with his 2024 Tanzpreis nomination marking his growing influence in contemporary dance.
