Before we can dance with Pleasure & Desire, we must dance with Boundaries. On a social level, a clear articulation of boundaries lays the ground for a safer space of encounter to emerge. On the level of consciousness, as in the biblical creation story, separation and individuation are prerequisites for awareness itself. We can only be in relationship to that which is not us. Artistic processes, too, those little acts of creation, can be perceived as processes of separation - what do I let in, what do I decide to keep out this time? In this project, we will begin by working somatically - for instance, tuning in to the sensations of our skin - both as boundary and first point of contact. We will explore exercises around intimacy and consent, move very slowly, and always center the well-being of all participants. We will research on how boundary makes relationship possible, to others, to our own artistic practice, to the world. The workshop draws heavily on David’s current PhD research around sexual, mystical, and choreographic practices as tools for cultivating a consensual erotic relationship with the world at large.
Additionally there is PLEASURE – a Contemporary class with David Bloom from 01.09.–22.10.2025 | Mon & Wed 18:15-19:45
What does it mean to do something with our bodies communally? What can you get from taking a dance class together that you can’t get from any other experience? And what is contemporary dance “technique” in a world where anything goes? I believe it is possible to remain aware & embodied even while enacting set exercises & sequences, & that this combination can give the performer a wide variety of options. The class begins from sensing the body itself somatically & then brings awareness to the spacetime we are moving through, using a combination of improvisation proposals, technical “exercises”, & set movement sequences. I’m also very interested in the idea of “taking class” itself, what it means to do so & what intentions people bring to the space. We will use the energy of the group present on that particular day, at that particular time, to co-create a unique experience & a joyful practice. What you practice regularly is always what you become good at, & if you practice the joy of dancing, the joy will grow.
