Herbst Tanz Spaziergang #1 – Mauer Meditationen

Herbst Tanz Spaziergang with Jess Curtis / Gravity, Gerald Pirner
In the frame of Tanz Spaziergänge

A meditation about the place where people were imprisoned by a wall. A meditation in which someone is invited to imagine, dancing, what people might have thought and felt in that place. People who dug tunnels to overcome this wall.
After first feeling the orientation model of the area, you then experience along tracings of the wall of such a tunnel, symbolically and at the same time performatively in yourself, this place and its history.

Jess Curtis / Gravity

Jess Curtis died unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, in San Francisco.

Gravity creates exceptionally engaging body-based art that physically addresses issues and ideas of relevance to anyone with a body. The company was founded in 2000 by choreographer-director Jess Curtis, whose work ranges from the underground extremes of San Francisco warehouse performances with such iconic companies as Contraband and CORE in the 1980s, to the exuberance of French circus tents with Compagnie Cahin-Caha, and the refinement of state theaters in Berlin, London, Glasgow, and other major cultural centers. Gravity’s innovative, accessible, and experimental work consistently engages with issues of embodied diversity including gender, sexuality, and disability.

Gerald Pirner

Gerald Pirner – after studying theatre and philosophy – works as an art critic, editor for the Kreuzberg publishing house Schwarze Risse and wrote articles on factory work and social struggles for various magazines. After going blind in 1989 due to retinitis pigmentosa, he trained as a media documentarian at the Sächsische Zeitung in Dresden in 1992 and subsequently began writing as an essayist for the online magazine kultura-extra in 2006. In 2014, he founded "Gerald Pirner - Texte zu Kunst", a website on which he publishes essays on visual arts, theatre, music and film from the perspective of a blind person. Since 2019 he has been working with Gravity Access Services as a consultant and co-author of audio descriptions. He also works on various dance performances and installations in audio description for Sophiensäle. In 2015, he began to work with photography and in 2017 founded the Fotostudio für Blinde Fotograf*innen (Photo Studio for Blind Photographers) in Berlin with the photographer Karsten Hein, among others.  He works primarily in the technique of light painting. His photographic works have been shown in various exhibitions, most recently in June 2021 in the forum edition of f/stop, the festival for photography in Leipzig. www.geraldpirner.com

Please note: If you use noise-cancelling headphones, it will not only change the experience of the Tanz Spaziergang, but you will also need the sounds of the environment to orientate yourself. Please use headphones that allow external sounds to become part of the listening experience.
The dance walk lasts approx. 45 min, wear comfortable shoes & clothes and feel free to bring water/tea.

↪ Directions from the U8 to the Berlin Wall Memorial Orientation Model
If you take the U8 in the direction of Wittenau, get off at Bernauerstraße in the direction of travel in front. The guiding strip will lead you to an approximately 8-metre-long corridor, at the end of which you will find the stairs leading up to the central island of Brunnenstraße. Once you have reached the top, cross Brunnenstraße to the left. You will also hear traffic lights that will guide you across Brunnenstraße. Once you have crossed Brunnenstraße to the left, walk straight on until you come across the steel tracings of the former house facades embedded in the ground between the mosaic paving and the lawn. Now turn 90 degrees to the left and walk straight along the tracings between the mosaic pavement and the lawn (about 20 m) until the lawn turns into tamped earth. To your left is the traffic of Brunnenstraße. You may be able to feel the thin, low, and barely stick-feelable steel edge that borders the lawn. Now turn 90 degrees to the right and feel your way along this edge between the lawn and the tamped earth for about 6 metres. The traffic on Brunnenstraße is now behind you and the traffic on Bernauerstraße is on your right. Now turn 90 degrees to the left and walk 5 steps straight ahead. You will come across the long side of the memorial's orientation model. The model is 3.5 m long and 2 m wide and is mounted horizontally on a 75 cm high plinth. You have now arrived at the place where our Wall Meditations begin. The Walk will also end here.
