There are days when it seems impossible to hold out any longer. The temptation is irresistible: slam the door, refuse to take up yet another battle, disengage from the conversation, cancel the meeting, delete social media. Leave. Say no to the (art) world, withdraw from a project, refuse to respond. An ultimate relief: to shed an unbearable burden, once and for all. If only one could let things go. If only one could afford to do so.
This lecture explores potentials and paradoxes of gestures of withdrawal - and impossibilities of letting go. In these times of exhaustion, can withdrawal become a way of resetting the conditions within which we work, opening up a search for more nourishing artistic and institutional practices? And if we finally find ways out - where might they actually lead?
