Description

In collaboration with Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin e.V. and external guests, the project RESIST! hosts weekly “Assemblies” from March 5 to May 7: every Thursday evening** from 5–7 pm, everyone interested is invited to gather at Uferstudio 5.

The assembly on 16 April will be hosted by the Dance & Parenthood Working Group (AG Tanz und Elternschaft): The working group was founded in 2020 within Zeitgenössischer Tanz e.V. (Contemporary Dance Association). It advocates for better working conditions for parents who are professional dancers and for the cultural participation of caregivers. In 2023, it developed the "Kids & Caregivers Rider," a set of recommendations with concrete ideas on how venues can implement family- and parent-friendly events. Artistically and culturally active, the working group develops formats that break down barriers and open up new spaces.

With the format of the “Assemblies,” we aim to offer the independent scene space and time for broader cultural and political exchange. While digital connections tend to encourage fast, largely anonymous and individualized expressions of opinion, we choose to invest in real social cohesion. Through the “Assemblies,” we create a solidaric setting in which reflection and discussion can take place live and on site. Together with Samirah Kenawi—an East German–socialized feminist activist of the Wende period and a graduate engineer—we build, shape, and explore through dance ideas and demands for our future."

During each assembly, the Freelance Dance Ensemble Berlin will give a 10-15 minute presentation calling on all dance and cultural professionals to make their changed realities visible. More information here.

Here is the official invitation from the Dance and Parenting Working Group:

„We invite people of all ages, caregivers and children, friends and colleagues to an interactive and lively exchange. Together, we want to develop utopias for a caring and equal society, based on the demands of feminist initiatives in East and West for a new constitution at the Round Table in 1989. At the time, these demands were largely ignored. But where would we be today if they had all been fulfilled? Together with our guest Samirah Kenawi  and all participants, we will build, craft, and dance to our ideas and demands for our future.“

Studio 5 is accessible without steps, but has a raised wooden floor which can be reached via a 1.5% inclined ramp. Wheelchair spaces are available. The barrier-free toilet is located in the foyer of the studio, a few meters from the studio. The event takes place in spoken German language.

Biographies

Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin (ZTB)

The Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin (ZTB) association has represented the interests of practitioners in dance, choreography, and performance in Berlin since 2000. Its aim is to create fair and productive conditions for the art form of dance and to promote transparent and equitable communication between artists, policymakers, and the public. Since 2017, ZTB has explicitly positioned itself as an open platform embracing the diversity of contemporary choreographic and performative practices.
Samirah Kenawi (she/her) was born in East Berlin in 1962. After completing her secondary education, she trained as a carpenter. She went on to study wood technology and subsequently worked as a research associate at the Eberswalde Institute of Forestry. Active in several unofficial GDR groups prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Samirah Kenawi entered politics in 1989. In 1990, she headed the Berlin office of the Independent Women’s Association, but soon came to the realization that socio-ecological models of society cannot be implemented without a corresponding economic foundation.
