Open Call - Emerging Change Artist Residency

With mentorship and studio space February-March and May 2023 at Tanzfabrik Berlin. Application until December 12th!
Emerging Change Artist Residency is part of the Residence Program of Tanzfabrik Berlin. In 2023, we have a scholarship dedicated to a Berlin-based queer BIPOC emerging artist.

Emerging Change is a curatorial proposal for equity, towards dismantling structural racism in the field of dance. This project aims to support and program artistic works of queer Black, Indigenous, People of Color, allowing the artists to be in close proximity/exposure with one another, to connect creatively and personally. It values peer-to-peer knowledge transfer through non-hierarchical mentorship. The residency focuses on creating opportunities for emerging artists to engage and receive guidance from established performers in the field of dance.

This project is inspired by Adrienne Maree brown’s book Emergent Strategies about how humans can utilize and emulate environmental systems of organization to create change within contemporary society. We envision Emerging Change as a growing collaborative network of support in the performance arts scene.

The residency will begin on mid-February 2023 and finish on May 28th 2023 in two blocks of rehearsal space.

It will enclose:
↪ In total, six weeks studio time, including participation in Emerging Change project
↪ Opportunity for a public showing of your work-in-progress
↪ A grant totaling of 7.500 €
↪ Technical support
↪ As desired, a regular mentoring and assistance by guest artists of Emerging Change and Tanzfabrik Berlin team on dramaturgy, concept development, production planning, research for potential partners and funding application if required.
↪ Participation in the incubation time with guest artists of Emerging Change, which offers peer-to-peer exchange, interdisciplinary workshops, envisioning discussions, deepening connections.

The residency program is addressed to emerging dance artists and choreographers residing in Berlin, of all ages who are self-identifying as queer BIPOC. We particularly recommend the application of artists who have not yet received any public funding and have not had opportunities for major production of their own work.

Students who are matriculated at a university or training center starting December 1, 2022 (dance/choreography department) are not eligible to participate.
