Grünentaler 9

Connecting Art and Community
Since September 2024, Tanzfabrik Berlin has opened a new accessible space at Grüntaler Straße 9, intentionally designed to foster exchange and collaboration with the local neighborhood. The space offers room for residencies, artistic research, performative installations, and dance solos, but above all, it is a vibrant meeting point for artistic experiments connected to the community and its people.

A key concern for Tanzfabrik is engaging with neighbors. Regularly, we invite local residents to our event format schnippeln & plaudernheld in the gallery space. These evenings are prepared together by the Tanzfabrik team and the current resident artists, offering opportunities for encounters, conversation, and shared experiences.

The gallery at Grüntaler Straße 9 intentionally opens towards the Wedding district and the Gesundbrunnen neighborhood. Unlike the enclosed Uferstudios site surrounded by a high brick wall, the gallery’s location and architecture enable open communication with the local community. Large windows provide transparency and visibility, a wide sidewalk invites passersby to linger, and the lively neighborhood with cafés, shops, and a nearby secondary school creates an urban atmosphere.

Thus, the space is understood not only as a place for artistic work but also as a connecting element between artists, audiences, and residents. It encourages low-threshold access, openness, and participation — contributing to intertwining art and everyday life in the urban space.

Körper & Kiez

The Körper & Kiez  program at Grüntaler 9 centers on artistic projects that engage deeply with the local community, exploring the intersections of body, urban space, and social dynamics. Supported by the Bezirkskulturfonds Mitte, the upcoming events highlight themes of ecological awareness, body politics, and communal exchange.

The interdisciplinary collective WILD ACCESS, led by choreographer Beatrix Joyce, presents in Glade, a site-specific performance situated in the Gesundbrunnen neighborhood. Using sound, light, and movement, the work investigates the role of non-human actors in urban ecosystems. The experience begins with a performative walk along the northern side of Grüntaler Straße and culminates in a gallery-based performance at Grüntaler 9.

Artist collective Urgent Bodies explores body politics with a focus on exhaustion, burnout, and sustainable, health-centered practices during their residency. Combining physical exercises with discursive reflections, they develop methods that nurture individual and collective well-being, with special attention to accessibility, inclusion, and community care.

Additionally, the schnippeln & plaudern regularly invite neighbors, artists, and guests to cook, share meals, and connect. These communal evenings foster informal encounters and strengthen the bonds between the Tanzfabrik community and the local neighborhood.
